Welcome to EfS

This Education for Sustainability web site is a place where sustainability education practice and research can be showcased, posted, shared and commented upon by teachers, researchers, and sustainability educators. It is run by the national Education for Sustainability advisors who are contracted by the Ministry of Education through School Support Services attached to universities - see the Contact Us page.

Sustainability is a critical issue for New Zealand environmentally, economically, politically, and socially. Education for Sustainability is about fostering innovative and motivated people who think and act sustainably - a goal supported through the holistic integrated approach of the New Zealand Curriculum. Key concepts such as cooperative learning, inquiry-based learning, experiential learning, innovative and creative thinking, sharing ideas, reflective practice, and critical thinking are all essential approaches to learning that underpin the NZ Curriculum's Vision, Principles, Key Competencies, and Values. EfS provides rich future-focused opportunities to learn - encouraging students to become active and positive members of their local, national, and global communities.

The teaching and learning materials included here support the aims of EfS that are developed in the Guidelines for Environmental Education in New Zealand Schools (1999), published for the Ministry of education by Learning Media and currently being revised.

New content on Education for Sustainability website from August 11 2008

The Sir Peter Blake Trust year 9-10 resource features this week.

If you would like to receive an email of new material added click on the email subscribe button to the right of the home page. That way, the website will visit you with fresh and inspiring ideas rather than you having to visit it. Please share your own ideas and materials on this site - we learn so much from each other.

This website deliberately doesn't have resource categories - it has a powerful Google-style search function so please type in a key word or phrase to begin your search or browse through the entire resources.
